Salidomara is the eldest unmarried daughter of Lord Morgav of Cibola.  She is quite homely in appearance and dresses rather frumpily, but this conceals a first-rate mind.  She inherited all of her father's guile, and is glad to have avoided marriage, for that most likely would have taken her far away from where the political action is.  She likes being ugly because it keeps her from being married off, though she suspects that Morgav has some other motive because ugliness alone is not enough of an explanation.  She is very intelligent and has a wry sense of humor, enjoying other people's discomfort when they have to give her polite flattery. She is good with abstract concepts, and must fight a tendency to get lost in thought.  She has also trained herself as a keen observer of details, and serves, against tradition, as the keeper of accounts for the headwoman of the hold.  With the long illness of Morgav's current wife, Salidomara is also beginning to take on the social responsibilities of Lady of the Hold.
Description:Age: 25; Hair: Black; Eyes: Grey; Height: 5'8"
Salidomara's face is very homely; not hideously ugly, but calling her 'plain' is still a compliment.  She's often described as 'horse-faced'.  She has a big beak of a nose and prominent teeth, slightly crooked.  Her eyes are rather squinty (she cultivates this on purpose) and grey as her father's.  Her complexion is rather florid, her skin is rather oily, and she usually has a zit or two somewhere on her face, even though at 25 she is long past puberty.  Her hair is black and straight, and she keeps it in a no-nonsense bun, even though it is really quite long.  She has a stocky figure and cultivates a bit of a slouch; when she stands up straight then it can be seen that she does possess womanly curves, though she is plumper than the ideal.  She generally dresses in dowdy clothes of black, dark brown, or mousy gray, often with skirts divided for riding astride.
Origin / Inspiration:After working with Morgav for awhile, I started wondering what it would be like in a family with him as the father.  Siblings scheming against each other, knowing that only one can have the ultimate prize, prepared to do all manner of underhanded things to each other and to their father to gain it.  Salidomara isn't a clone of any particular character from anywhere else; she just sort of grew on me as I was thinking about Morgav.
What she most wants:To inherit the rule of Cibola Hold when Morgav dies, even though she knows it's going to go to one of her brothers instead.
What she most fears:Ending up in a stultifying marriage with no chance for intellectual stimulation or intrigue of any sort.
If she lived on Earth:Salidomara would be much more powerful than she is on Pern, becuase women have more opportunity here. Most likely she would be a high-powered lawyer, or else a corporate VP scheming to climb the ladder.
